10/23 WSOBP VI Satellite Tournament

Once again players from throughout the Southwest descended upon Albuquerque for their chance at free entry into the World Series of Beer Pong VI, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Though AZ and CO did not mkae the trip (because everyone in those states already has a bid!) the competition was tough with star and up-and-coming teams out of El Paso, Clovis, and ABQ all vying for the win.

Prelims started about 30 minutes late as we waited for some last minute partnerships to form. Not too bad a start for the first tournament I would run and not also participate in. They ran smoothly enough, with the exception of a single Espanola team who vanished after their first two prelim games. The general consensus was that these guys thought it was a straight double elim tournament, and after they lost their first two games they assumed they were out. Sucks for team Douche Douche Douche, but I'm sure the two teams who got free prelim wins didn't mind so much (Blog About Us and Fushigi).

After prelims were finished, only a single team emerged undefeated. Those of you who claim I'm biased just because I'm marrying her need look no further for proof that she's good. The prettiest girl in pong, Beth G., playing with my former partner AJ Weddington of team Victorious Secret went 4-0 with a +12 cup differential, securing the top seed. The following three seeds were a mix of Clovis, ABQ, and El Paso teams.

Seed Team Name Wins Losses CD Win %
1 Victorious Secret (ABQ) 4 0 12 100.00%
2 Second Coming (Clovis) 3 1 10 75.00%
3 David and Goliath (ABQ) 3 1 7 75.00%
4 Tropical Beans (El Paso) 3 1 5 75.00%
5 Burque Bombers (ABQ) 3 1 4 75.00%
6 TKO (ABQ) 3 1 3 75.00%
7 2 Guys 10 Cups (ABQ) 2 2 6 50.00%
8 Blog About Us (ABQ/Clovis) 2 2 4 50.00%
9 In and Around the Cup (ABQ) 2 2 -1 50.00%
10 A Lotta Handsome (ABQ) 2 2 -3 50.00%
11 DnA (ABQ) 2 2 -4 50.00%
12 Sink and Dethrone (El Paso) 1 3 -4 25.00%
13 Fushigi (ABQ) 1 3 -8 25.00%
14 Bert and Ernie (ABQ) 1 3 -8 25.00%
15 Taste the Rainbow (ABQ) 0 4 -6 0.00%
16 Team Douche Douche Douche (Espanola) 0 4 -17 0.00%

The first couple rounds of bracket play saw a number of surprise losses. The up-and-coming team A Lotta Handsome took a loss to a new team on the ABQ scene, 2 Guys 10 Cups. El Paso stars Sink and Dethrone lost to their hometown rivals Tropical Beans, and ABQ's former dream team of Kyle and Ted lost their first game to what could be the city's newest power team, David and Goliath. TKO would then lose to the Burque Bombers in the losers bracket, before ducking out for the night.

Unfortunately Victourious Secret's run came to an end early in bracket play. They ended up taking losses to Tropical Beans and 2Guys. They'll need to work on their longevity in tournament play going into the future. After Sink and Dethrone lost to David and Goliath in the same round, we were down to the final four: El Paso's Tropical Beans, Clovis's Second Coming, ABQ's David and Goliath, and the wildcard hometown team 2 Guys 10 Cups.

With the entire crowd cheering for them, David and Goliath just barely knocked out the wild card team, before facing El Paso in the losers bracket finals. So many close and emotional games in a row ended up being too much for ABQ's last hope, and they bowed out to the out-of-towners. This left El Paso facing Clovis for the whole thing. El Paso would have to defeat Clovis twice to take the win.

After a heated first match (in which El Paso was forced to run three to send the game into OT), Tropical Beans took the win. This meant a single final game was left to determine the winners. Would the 2nd seed Clovis team secure their dominance of the competition, or would El Paso pull off the double dip and take home their city's first satty bids? These are the kinds of games players and non-players alike love to watch. It was a game of verbal vs. physical defense, as the shit talking from Clovis faced the wild antics from El Paso. In the end, Clovis took the game down. Congrats to Elliot and Ian on their win.
