10/8/11 Coed/40+ WSOBP VII Satellite Tournament
In spite of all the naysaying leading up to the event, I think I can safely say that everyone who participated in our first Coed/40+ satty enjoyed the change of pace and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We had a few teams come out from Clovis, and Colorado seems to have become a regular part of our satty scene, sending five players out this time. And of course, I have to give a special shout-out to Mike Thomas, who has yet to miss an ABQ satellite tournament. We really do appreciate you making it out here every time Mike!
The obvious favorites going into the tournament, Straight Outta Pongton, took an early lead going 4-0 in prelims. The other pre-tournament favorites, Clovis’s Misery is Business, and the CO/ABQ hybrid team, Interstate Trail Mix, took the second and third seed respectively.
After prelims had ended, four teams had the unfortunate luck to go 0-4. With how Jessie and John were performing in warm-up, it was surprising to see their team among the bottom four. In their defense, they had one of the toughest lineups, having to face both Pongton and Misery in prelims. Another surprise in the bottom four was You’re No Daisy (David K. and Angela T.), who won every coin toss but lost every game. Mike Thomas also found himself in the bottom four, though we still love that he keeps coming out!
Prelim Rankings Below:
When the brackets were split, it turned out that most of the out-of-towners wound up in one bracket, with all the local teams in the other. Pongton found itself in a bracket with Fighting Camels (Edan and his step-dad), High Maintenance (Gabe and Aly), Rigged for the Loss (Jeremy and Ryan), and the single non-local team in the bracket, CO’s Ponging with Kevin. Pongton faced Camels in the winners bracket finals, and managed to take it down by two cups. In that bracket’s finals, Rigged found themselves facing Pongton. Though Rigged held an early two cup lead for several rounds, they couldn’t close and Pongton advanced to the finals.
In the other bracket, Glaser, Manny, Lucas, and Andy found themselves surrounded by out-of-towners (really the best way to practice for the Series). Mr. Satty’s bid run came to an end at the hands of Yah, It’s Genetic (Glaser and his dad). Genetic also went on to knock out the other early favorites from Clovis, Misery is Business. As a result it would be a guaranteed ABQ finals. Brenda seemed to take the loss pretty hard, but I hope her spirits rebounded by the night’s end. That bracket’s finals saw Obnoxious Fools (Andy and Bob) facing Genetic. Glaser’s run for a second bid came to an end when Bob made the last two cups.
This put Straight Outta Pongton against Obnoxious Fools in the finals. For everyone but PeeWee, this was the first satty finals they had played in, and it showed. It seemed like PeeWee was the only one completely comfortable shooting at this point. Beth carried her weight near the end, making last cup on her first try in both games. Andy and Bob had it in their grasp, but couldn’t get in sync with each other at the pivotal moments.
Congrats to PeeWee and Beth for taking down the satty, and securing their spot at World Series of Beer Pong VII! The next satty will be multi-partner, so start getting those teams ready!
