WSOBP VII Satellite Tournament
WSOBP VII Satellite Tournament
Wow. I guess you could say SWBP’s first experiment with multi-partner satellites was a success. 51 teams made up of 58 individual players made this the largest tournament ever to take place in the state of New Mexico! While I still disagree with the format for use in larger, more “legitimate” tournaments (like mid-majors) for reasons I’ve disclosed at length before, for satellites I concede that it might be the right way to go.
There were a record number of traveling teams in attendance as well, even with El Paso bailing at the last minute. Colorado boasted an astonishing 11 teams piled into two cars making the drive down. The long thought-lost Cruces pong scene is apparently still alive and well, as they showed up with four teams. Of course you know Clovis wasn’t gonna miss out on a potential satellite win, and they showed up with five players. I think the ABQ/Clovis rivalry has finally reached its “friendly” stage, as four of the five Clovis players paired with ABQ for their second team. Texas showed up with a team, but they were prematurely ejected from the bar as a result of their vertical IDs. I’m really sorry to team Sharpshooter and Clutch, that’s a really shitty situation, but the bar had to protect itself and didn’t have much of a choice. I look forward to ponging with you guys at the Series!
After the tournament got underway there were only a few surprising early knockouts. Manny and I just couldn’t get in sync with each other and went out 0-2, way earlier than either of us expected. Fresh off his singles accomplishments in Dallas, most expected both of PeeWee’s teams to go far, but he and Brenda bucked that trend by going 0-2 as well. No Remorse, another favored ABQ team, couldn’t seem to get a handle on David Glaser, as both of their losses were to his two teams. Another game of note was the first round game between Stop Staring at My Re-Rack (Beth and Brenda) and The Dukes of Albuquerque (Edan and Derek). Always overlooked, the girls ran 10/11 and knocked the incredulous favorites to the losers bracket.
No Chance and Second Coming had split partners for this tournament, and they didn’t have to wait long before facing each other. Though generally believed to be the B-players on our respective teams, Elliot and I took an early, dominant lead in the game, and were on course for taking down until in an act of drunken non-coordination, I gave them a free cup to the three rack. Gabe and Ian quickly took advantage and knocked Elliot and I to the losers bracket.
Hultquist and Ian found themselves in an interesting situation in the final four of the winners bracket. Each of their teams were on opposite sides of the bracket, against each other. On one side it was Second Coming vs. Heisenberg’s Revenge, and on the other was Approach With Caution vs. Smokin Trees and Takin Threes. Each of Hultquist’s partners were in the hunt for their second bid of the year. In the first matchup, Clovis proved favorable and knocked Hultquist/Edan to the losers bracket. In the second, PeeWee and Hultquist were able to take down Ian and Gabe.
This put Second Coming against Smokin Trees and Takin Threes. PeeWee was on a mission and was not about to lose to the Clovis team. And he didn’t. PeeWee and Hultquist advanced to the finals, which would be the first satty finals for Hultquist.
The high pressure games can always be found in the losers bracket, since there’s no more time for mistakes. Sonny found himself in a bad spot when both of his teams had to face one another, meaning he automatically lost (and won, depending on if you’re a glass half full kinda person). Glaser beat Corey, meaning Bareford’s chance for a third bid were done.
On the other side of the bracket Approach With Caution faced Plan B&J (Glaser and Ben White). Ben hadn’t even been planning on playing in the tournament until the morning of, when Glaser found out his El Paso teammate wasn’t coming. It was working out for both of them, as they knocked out Gabe and Ian, and found themselves in the losers semi-finals.
It was here that Glaser faced the same situation Sonny had earlier, both of his partners had to play off and only one team would advance to the losers finals. Most expected Sonny to take this game down. He has more experience by far, should probably have a bid by now, and plays much more often than Ben. Ben, apparently, was hungrier, and ended up taking the game down in a surprising display of talent.
So they advanced to the losers finals against Clovis’s Second Coming. Second Coming won the second satellite of 2010 in ABQ, and have been in the hunt to do the same at least once this year. It’s always fun when you have two cities face off against one another. It had happened a couple of times earlier between Colorado and ABQ teams, but when home state rivals face off, the crowd’s energy definitely escalates. When Ben and Glaser took it down, the room exploded.
And then, the finals. Two satty winners, and two who had never made a satty finals before. PeeWee and Hultquist were comfortable in the winners spot, knowing they’d only have to win once to take it down. I’ve never seen Ben so serious before. At one point he told Glaser, “I want this. Let’s go.”
Although the shooting wasn’t amazing, the excitement of the finals was still pretty intense. Both Ben and Hultquist were shooting near the top of their game, which meant it was really about whether the veterans could take advantage of every three ball. I’ll let the video do the talking:
Congrats to the last minute team, Plan B&J for taking it down. Get ready for the 3-day in December guys. Six bids going out, who wants em?
