12/3 World Series of Beer Pong Satellite

For the most part I want to forget this satellite ever happened, simply for how poorly I performed. If Albuquerque hadn't taken the win in the end, I may have just pretended otherwise. 15 teams from around New Mexico along with 5 teams out of El Paso signed up for a chance at free entry into the World Series of Beer Pong VI. As is quickly becoming the norm in ABQ, the prelims were full of upsets and surprisingly close matches. After all was said and done, only three teams emerged undefeated from the prelims. Out of El Paso Adventure Time and The Ones took the 1st and 3rd seed while ABQ's new teaming of Doug and Brent as Number One Zeroes took the 2nd seed.

Seed Team Name Wins Losses Total CD Win %
1 Adventure Time (El Paso) 4 0 19 100.00%
2 Number 1 Zeros (ABQ) 4 0 17 100.00%
3 The Ones (El Paso) 4 0 6 100.00%
4 Villa Y Zapata (El Paso) 3 1 5 75.00%
5 2 Outer (ABQ) 3 1 3 75.00%
6 Victorious Secret (ABQ) 2 2 2 50.00%
7 Team Nasty (El Paso) 2 2 1 50.00%
8 DGK (ABQ) 2 2 1 50.00%
9 Against the Ropes (ABQ) 2 2 0 50.00%
10 10 Inches Soft (ABQ) 2 2 -1 50.00%
11 Get A Room (Amarillo) 2 2 -1 50.00%
12 Burque Bombers (ABQ) 2 2 -2 50.00%
13 Crutch Shot (El Paso) 2 2 -6 50.00%
14 Just Another Bid (ABQ) 1 3 0 25.00%
15 Lone Ranger and Tonto (ABQ) 1 3 -1 25.00%
16 Sink em and Drink em (ABQ) 1 3 -4 25.00%
17 Stephven Squared (ABQ) 1 3 -8 25.00%
18 2 Boys 1 Cup (ABQ) 1 3 -9 25.00%
19 Schwasty Faces (ABQ) 1 3 -12 25.00%
20 Santa's Babies (ABQ) 0 4 -10 0.00%

The top 16 teams were then seeded into a double elimination bracket. The first round only saw a couple of upsets, including Burque Bombers losing to the last minute team 2 Outer (Manny and Lou). 2 Outer would then go on to knock out early favorites Just Another Bid before bowing out of the tournament.

The final seven teams include 3 El Paso Teams (Adventure Time, The Ones, Villa Y Zapata), 3 ABQ teams (Against the Ropes, 10 Inches Soft, Number One Zeroes), and 1 Amarillo team (Get a Room). A bracket snafu earlier in the tournament resulted in The Ones having a recorded loss in a game they had actually won. I apologize profusely for this and can only say that when it came to my attention I made the best decision I thought to guarantee the proper matchups took place and every team was guaranteed two losses. It was confusing to a lot of the players because a few games ended up being played out of order. Those of you who know me well know that I take running smooth and legitmate tournaments extremely seriously, and will take every measure to make sure this kind of thing never happens again.

Back in the tournament, it all came down to El Paso's Adventure Time facing the undefeated ABQ team Against the Ropes. Up until this point some people doubted PeeWee's ability to shoot under extreme pressure, but he proved those doubts unfounded in this final matchup. Twice Adventure Time sank the one cup with two to go on their side. Each time Gabe took the first shot and PeeWee drained the one cup with ease, amidst the shouts and antics of the entire El Paso contingent. Finally Gabe and PeeWee ended the drama by sinking the last cup first, and The El Paso boys had had enough.

Congratulations to Gabe for taking his third satellite bid of the year, and to PeeWee for getting his first and guaranteeing his first trip out to the Series. Only 27 more days to go, they better be ready for the Southwest!

See you all in Vegas!
