3/25 WSOBP VII Satellite Tournament
24 teams from the tri-city region (ABQ, Clovis, El Paso) showed up at Coaches to compete for this year’s first SWBP World Series of Beer Pong VII satellite tournament. Clovis showed up with three teams, including the blast from the past Andy Mazz and CO, who have dropped eHarmony and now go under the team name Encore. Not sure what kind of an encore occurs when nothing has happened yet, but I kid ;). El Paso, as usual, showed up in force with five teams. Even without their fearless leaders, Mark and Bobby, they made a solid showing and could always be found supporting each other the entire night, including nearly causing riots during prelim games! That kind of shit talk during prelims doesn’t happen often, not even at the Series itself.
The early rounds of prelim play saw some heavy matchups, as would be expected with the quality of teams in attendance. One of the favorites going in to the satty, No Chance, was in dire straits halfway through prelims. After facing both El Paso’s Adventure Time and Crooked Vultures, No Chance was in serious trouble. Adventure Time witnessed a miracle in Gabe opening 0 for 8. Though they got it down to 3 cups, the loss was inevitable. In the Vultures game it was one of those classic city-on-city spectator matches, with ABQ players screaming to support No Chance while El Paso had nothing better to do than back up their boys as well. No Chance made the last cup with three to go, making it all but over. The Vultures weren’t ready for a loss, though, and ran all three in rebuttal. After the second OT, No Chance was looking at a 1-2 record, and was desperate for a win just to make the bracket. In their final game they faced another El Paso team in the Ron Burgandys. Gabe was not going to lose this game, and shot lights out. The El Paso boys faltered and only managed two cups before taking the loss.
After all was said and done the top 16 teams were ready for bracket play. All three Clovis teams made the bracket, with Encore securing the 2 seed with a 4-0 +14 record. Four El Paso teams made it in, with Let’s Get Tropical barely squeaking in at 2-2 -4. As seems typical, the top three seeded teams each hailed from a different city. ABQ’s 10 Inches Soft took the 1 seed, Clovis’s Encore the 2, and El Paso’s Adventure Time the 3. Final prelim rankings can be found below:
The first round of bracket play saw few surprises, with the possible exception of Victorious Secret taking down Adventure Time. They shocked everyone with AJ shooting his first perfect game, and Beth missing only twice. It’s hard to compete with that, and Adventure Time faced a tough losers bracket.
The second round in the winners bracket was a Clovis v ABQ brawl. Clovis’s We Make Charlie Sheen Proud took down ABQ’s 10 Inches, while the ABQ teams Cheech&Pong and BLUNT Trauma took down Clovis’s Native Duo and Encore.
This made the losers bracket incredibly tough. Burque Bombers went on a run knocking out Encore and Victorious Secret before finally bowing out to Cheech&Pong. 10 Inches Soft made it their mission to end El Paso’s night, taking out Crooked Vultures and their rivals Adventure Time before finally losing to the hometown competition. In the end the final three teams were Clovis’s Charlie Sheen and ABQ’s Cheech&Pong in the losers bracket finals, the winner of which would face ABQ’s No Chance.
Clovis took an early lead in the game, but a few key rim-outs by Valdez allowed ABQ to move ahead and take the win, guaranteeing an ABQ victory for the tournament. In the first game against No Chance, Cheech&Pong shot amazing while their opponents shot terribly (I had my first troll, and what a terrible time for it to happen), making for an easy win. In the second game, No Chance finally turned it on and made for a good matchup. Blow for blow was exchanged until Cheech&Pong made the last cup with two to go. Gabe sunk the 2 with ease, and I followed up with the one. In OT the reverse happened, with Edan and Corey going 2 in rebuttal. In the second OT No Chance stalled, failing to put two together. That was enough for Cheech&Pong. They ended No Chance’s night one game shy of the win.
Congrats to Edan and Corey, who will be the first team repping SWBP at WSOBP VII. The real question now is: Who is gonna pick these two up for the next satty?
A big shout-out to our cousins from Clovis and El Paso, it was great seeing you all and I hope you make it to the next one in April!
