6/17 World Series of Beer Pong Satellite
What is going on Albuquerque? Only 18 teams turn out for a World Series satty? And five of those teams are from different states? I'm a little dissapointed in you. Still though, where there's beer pong, there's good times, and this was no exception.
Prelims started about 15 minutes late as we waited for some late comers, and wondered where Clovis was. Expecting two teams out of our NM brethren, unforseen circumstances led to them not making the trip. Oh well, guess they'll just be paying their way to Vegas with the money they saved on gas. Arizona once again graced the ABQ scene with two teams, one featuring DOE#17 BMarx and previous satty winner Vance Anzaldua. Strangely absent from the lineup was ABQ's best known team, No Chance. After two second place finishes in the previous two satties, Gabe decided to try his luck with David Glaser as team They Google Me. Fresh off their honeymoon, Clawless and his new wife Beth G. made a go of it as well. Corey, who had won both previous satties, was going for his third with retiree Ted Wallace.
Probably the biggest upset in round 1 of prelims was the ABQ's Finest vs. Let's Lose. The last minute teaming of Robert Trasp and Sean Allen seemed like a shaky union, especially with Robert not having thrown a ball in over a month, but that proved to be no big deal. Beth and Jeremy struggled against the nearly perfect shooting of the other team, and lost by 7 cups.
Round 2 was mostly predictable, with the possible exceptions of Remember the Alamo (Gillooly and Brent) taking down Stuck in the Sky (Lucas and Javier), and El Paso's Bang Cup defeating AZ's Natural Talent. By round 4, two of the pre-tournament favorites faced off in what should have been an exciting show down, Natural Talent vs. They Google Me. Unfortunately it wasn't as great a game as it should have been, with Gabe and David losing by 3 cups.
After prelims, only two teams went 0-4, and were the two teams that did not advance to bracket play. Sorry CMF and Urine Trouble, hope you guys had a good time at least!
The first surprise in bracket play came when Work Done (Corey and Ted) lost in the first round to EP's Niah's Ark. With that chip on their shoulders, they fought their way through the losers bracket only to run into Natural Talent in the semi-finals. They were narrowly able to pull of the first win, and the crowd gathered to watch if Marx would be knocked out by the ABQ team. Corey was on fire, but unfortunately Ted struggled in what would be his last game of the tournament. This put Marx and Vance in the finals.
On the other side of the bracket, EP's Bang Cup was cleaning house, knocking team after team into the losers bracket. They forced They Google Me and Gotta Smash Em All into a match against each other, where the former pulled off the win to face the El Paso boys in the semi-finals. At this point in the tournament, David and Gabe were the only ABQ team left in the running. Fortunately for the home town, they knocked El Paso out.
This left AZ's Natural Talent against ABQ's They Google Me in the finals, a best-of-3 to determine the bid winners. For some reason, the excitement level was not as high in this matchup as had been in the Work Done vs. Natural Talent semi-finals game, as Edan was the only one talking for most of the finals. Both teams seemed to struggle in these last games, but AZ was able to pull of the first win. With the pressure on, and amidst chants of "Double Dip", David and Gabe pulled off the second win. This left a single game to determine the whole thing. Vance decided it was his time to shine, and went on a run that left Marx on the sidelines. In the end, it was too much for David and Gabe to overcome, and Gabe had to settle for his third 2nd-place in a row.
Congrats to Marx and Vance for their win, hope to see you all in July for the Southwest Championships!
