SWBP I Recap
What a night! Despite the haters and naysayers, Southwest Beer Pong’s inaugural tournament at Coaches last night was a huge success. 26 teams competed for the $500 first place prize.
Despite a few hiccups when getting things started, most participants were happy to wait as the organizers (read: myself) redrew and redrew the bracket. Games started at 7:00 and the tournament moved quickly through the first few rounds. One notable surprise was Vagtastic Voyage’s performance. Eric Searle of the SWBP original team is moving, making this the last voyage for the team. Early favorites, they left Coaches with a disappointing 0-2 record. We’ll miss you Eric, what will John do without you?
The father/son team, KingO’Pain began building a following early in the tournament, even after falling into the losers bracket after their first game against Apple Shampoo. Unfortunately, having crowd support isn’t enough to win, and they made their exit after losing to Candy Mountain.
Making their way easily through the winner’s bracket was SWBP home team Skinny White Bitches. The only close game was their second (against Team Faded), which went into OT (mostly due to yours truly sucking it up big time). They faced another early favorite in their fourth game against G-Squad. This game, too, made it into OT, but a lucky 2 cup hit send the Squad to the losers bracket.
By the fourth round in the losers bracket, Biggle My Jalls and Cup Killers
were making short work of the competition. Jalls, perhaps with inflated egos after taking second in the last CHBP title, was confident they’d make the finals easily. Balls Deep firmly disagreed, and sent them packing just short of the semifinals. The Cup Killers were doing very well until they had the misfortune of playing against G-Squad. With renewed vigor after their disappointing defeat the previous game, Squad defeated both the Killers as well as Balls Deep.
The semifinals saw G-Squad facing the 3-1 record of Team Dynasty. It was a close game, but third place wasn’t good enough for the Squad.
This pit the undefeated Skinny White Bitches (5-0) against G-Squad (6-1) in the finals. With the entire bar watching, the Bitches performed very poorly in the first game, taking a 4 cup loss. This was mostly due to a repeated outbreak of suck in myself (sorry AJ). The second game seemed like an easy win for the Bitches, as they lead the whole way, taking each rerack first. The deadly one-cup proved to be too much for them, though, and the determination of G-Squad made them the first Southwest Beer Pong Champions (which is much more impressive than that silly $500 anyway). Watch video of the final match below.
We hope everyone enjoyed themselves, I know I did. Keep checking the website for news of our next tournament, and make sure you tell your friends how badass Southwest Beer Pong is!
