9/8 World Series of Beer Pong Satellite
I have to say I wasn't sure what to expect when All American came to our town to run the tournament. As is well known I have pretty high standards for tournaments, and so was very curious as to how the new-comers would fare. The tournament did start about an hour late, though I expected that much whenever it comes to new events. There was a computer error which prevented the bracket from randomly seeding the teams, but that was quickly fixed by the tried and true names-in-a-hat method. Once the tournament got underway, it was smooth sailing.
There were 9 tables set up total. Six tables were used for tournament play, while two were open for practice/side games. The last table was set up next to the computer, and was solely for players wanting to take their shot at Mike and Byron. I have to say some of the games that took place at that table were more exciting than any of the tourny games. I remember taking my shot at Sonoma 1v1, making the last cup with three in front of Mike. Of course he hit all three for the rebuttal, and I crumbled in OT. I'll get you next time Seivert!
Back in the tournament, I have to say that there are no more heated matches than when two cities play against each other. The ABQ vs Clovis matches were by far the most rowdy of the night. Clovis is always good at backing their players, and they got a taste of ABQ solidarity. Probably the most heated match was Clovis's Second Coming vs. ABQ's Double J's in the semifinals. All other games were stopped as everyone chose their side and started screaming. Every miss was called out on, and every made cup was cheered for. In the end, Clovis had to settle for the long ride home as it would be an ABQ-only finals.
In the finals No Chance (myself and Gabe) faced the Double J's (Jack and Josh), in a bittersweet matchup. It was hard to for the sideliners to choose one side, because we were all happy that no matter what, ABQ was taking it's first satellite win. Gabe and I struggled in the first game, easily losing to the J's. All stops were pulled in the second game, however, and after a smooth 1-2 we pulled the win.
After the tournament was over, and the cheers and excitement had died down, All American decided to throw a second single-elim cash tournament for everyone who was still eager for pong. Though Beth and I had work early the next morning, we couldn't say no. Seivert and Byron also paired up, and I was only too eager to face them. Naturally, we ended up facing them in the finals. Though I had a rocky start (as always), Gabe carried us through the early rounds enough that when I woke up we were able to take the win. That's right, we beat the AC champs! I could never win another game and be happy with that. Afterward Mike and Byron wanted to play us again for the second place winnings. We were quick to agree, and took them down a second time.
In the game for third place, the female all-stars Beth and Shannon faced All American's Boston and Chris in what would be the longest most grueling-to-watch game I've ever witnessed. After what must have been at least 25 minutes, the girls made the last cup and Boston graciously tossed in the towel.
All in all, the tournament was a great success. Thanks again for everyone who came out to compete. I hope you all had a good time, and are ready for more satellite action, because we got some plans in the works!
