About

I first discovered the game of beer pong (or beirut to those nonconformists out there) like many do, in college. I never really played it, but watched from the sidelines. The reason I never played was that back in those early years I didn’t drink beer, and for this I will always be ashamed, and regretful. Anyway, it just seemed like an excuse to drink like any other drinking game a la kings, flip cup, quarters, etc..

It wasn’t until a few years later, during the summer after I graduated, that I really started to play the game. My sister, who was living with me at the time, had acquired a rudimentary pong table from one of her friends. Really it was more a piece of plywood with black paint than a pong table, but it worked for us novices. That summer (the summer of 2k7) was one of the best of my life, in no small part due to the game of beer pong.

After that summer I was really into the game, and had gathered a small following of players who would come to my house on Comanche every weekend to play. Thus Comanche House Beer Pong (CHBP) was born. We’d hold monthly tournaments and the like, and played just about every other day.

It was during this height of CHBP’s popularity that I met the other would-be founders of SWBP. Kyle, Gary, and AJ had been friends since high school, and they were avid pong players. Through the small world that is Albuquerque, they got word of CHBP and became frequent participants. John joined the fold soon after that as he was a drinker who knew just about everyone in this town. Gary moved in to the Comanche House with me and my other roommate Guy around this time (I think around late winter 2008).

A year and hundreds of nights of beer pong later, the World Series of Beer Pong in Vegas approached. Gary and Kyle (Boats and Hoes) along with John and his teammate Eric (Vagtastic Voyage) donned custom shirts with the CHBP logo and competed in the event. Though their performance was sub par, the experience was one they would not soon forget.

It was on this trip that Kyle and John discussed the idea of getting something bigger than just CHBP going in Albuquerque. After meeting some of the other big names in the game, they saw what was going on in other parts of the country and decided it was possible in Albuquerque as well. Thus Southwest Beer Pong was born.

Our plans were to provide a place for Albuquerque players to meet and discuss the game, to plan and host monthly tournaments at local venues, and eventually host leagues as well as satellites to the World Series of Beer Pong itself.

And, of course, we wanted to play as much beer pong as possible! I’m hopeful that Albuquerque will oblige ;).

See you across the table,
