Fox and Hound Beer Pong Tourney – Singles, August, 2010

So SWBP hosts yet another great tournament, this one was using a 64-bracket with 40 players, with a record turn out for new players, consisting of about half the field. Talking to Kyle he said, “We have a lot of new girls here, so the free thing is really working out”. Many of the girls made it deep in the tourney, even beating some of the top SWBP players. I spoke with many of the ladies, first talking to Joy, and it was her first time ever playing the game. Joy came straight from work as a legal assistant, so she was by far the most formally dressed. She made a great effort in her first game, at one point even sinking three cups in a row. She said, “I had a really good time. I lost, but not by very much!” When I asked if she would play again, Joy said, “Oh, definitely, and not just because it’s free, but because it’s fun!” Way to go Joy, we certainly welcome you back in the future.

Another one of the new girls, Jenna, also played very well. “I went to NM State, so [beer pong] was the unofficial sport of NMSU,” she said. Jenna Majored in Journalism with a minor in Government. It looked to me like her second minor was beer pong. “I’m going to beat all the guys here”, she said. While Jenna did go deep in the tournament, she was eventually knocked out by one of the boys, but I expect we will see her again.

Just shortly after talking to Jenna, I caught the tail end of the game featuring Clawless and Ryan, yet another new girl to the game. This time it was a major upset, with Ryan beating Clawless by three cups. Ryan sank the last cup on her first throw. Clawless did make one of his three rebuttals, but eventually fell to the lovely lady. Indeed one of the many upsets of the night! When I asked her how it felt to beat one of NM’s best, she said, “It feels pretty good, but I didn’t know it was such a big deal!” Ryan has been a casual player for years, and this was her second time at a structured event. When I asked about her chances, she proclaimed, “I’m going to win!” When I asked Jeremy about the game, he just said, “She’s awesome, and kicked my ass.” Ryan did go deep, only to run into me in the loser’s bracket, and I was just shooting really well and beat her with six cups to go. Sorry Ryan, but I have a feeling this won’t be your last stand.

Notable mention to Ally, who made it to the quarter finals I think, or at least got very close. She was very consistent, and when it came down to the last cup, she was all business. I’m thinking Casey should ask her for some pointers. Also Beth had an amazing game against Kyle, crushing him in the end. At one point, she actually made the last cup, only to have it swirl around twice before somehow flying out of the cup. Kyle gave it a valiant effort, but Beth was the victor when the final cup fell. And of course I have to give it up to Mody; Jack has been trying to get her out to another tournament for some time, so it was great to see her out playing the game. Big props go out to Shannon, a SWBP regular at the tournaments. In warm up she three cupped me twice to take me down, and made a solid run as the night wore on. We are all glad you still come, even ‘post breakup’ with what’s-his-face. It will be a sad day for SWBP when you move back to CO, and you will be surely missed. Finally there was Kelly and Lynette, both are servers/bartenders at Coaches on Tuesdays, and both decided to come play at Fox and Hound. I caught up with Kelly for a bit of a rap session. Kelly said “I’m not a beer pong player, but [this] is fun!” Unfortunately Kelly lost her first two games, but I still wanted to give both girls recognition simply for showing up. Big ups to all the ladies who came to play, we certainly hope to see more of you at the tables.

One surprise of the night was when BioJax walked in the room, a full 45 minutes late, and was talked into signing up. For those of you who don’t know, BioJax has claimed retirement, after facing some brutal losses last month. He agreed to play in the Best of the West, but then said he was kaput. However, beer pong is just like the mafia; it’s easy to get in, but impossible to get out. Jack claimed that he was simply there, “To make sure [Donovan] didn’t win.” See, Jack and I had a bet going; for whatever reason Jack can’t seem to support me in any endeavor, but instead has to challenging me. This time it was 6:1 against me winning. I knew my chances were slim, but I had to take the bet. We made it ten bucks, and Jack agreed. More on that later. Considering his time away from the game Jack, aka the “Bret Favre of Beer Pong” (according to Chris Gillooly - how appropriate in light of recent news that Bret is actually retiring, for the third time), actually played quite well. He was eventually knocked out, but he did make a great run. I have a feeling Jack’s retirement plans are very close to an end.

As for Don Sifu, my games went like this; first game against Adam Holbrook was a good one; I ran like four or five cups before he made his first, but then he came back and we were basically even, then at three cups, we were back and forth until the last two cups, where we both hit a wall, missing several shots in a row. Finally I made the last cup on the first shot, and Adam was unable to close it out, giving me the victory. Second, I was up against AJ, and there isn’t much to say there; the man simply crushed me, “lights out” as they say. I mean the guy couldn’t miss, and while I had opportunity to keep it close, I was just enough off to fall way behind. In the end I had seven cups standing; not even a re-rack! When I moved to the loser’s bracket, I was up against Tom from team Bob n Tom, and to be honest I was nervous. Despite their age, they have proven to be formidable opponents. However, Tom was not quite on, and I was not going to have another seven cup loss, so this time I focused and ran pretty well, beating him with five or six cups left. Up next was Ryan, and well, I’ve already told you how that went. However, there is no doubt she was the loveliest opponent of my night! Then, it was the showdown between me and Clawless (dun dun DUNNNNN!). Jeremy had been pounding them back, and as the game opened, we both were a bit off. I think I nabbed a one cup lead early on, but then Clawless took off his flip flops, and got down to business. Although it was fairly close, Jeremy simply would not let me win, shutting me down on the first throw of the last cup. Jeremy later went on to crush John ‘Jewel’ Jones to move on the semi finals. That ended my night, and without saying a word, I walked over to Jack and slipped him a tenner quietly. Next time buddy, next time…(or the next time!).

Besides all the deep runs by the ladies, there was yet another surprise. The Dark Horse of the night was Joe Z, aka Smokey Joe, aka Little Big Time. He went 5-0 against NM’s best, only to lose back to back against Clawless, who was on and off all night, but seemed to step it up when it mattered most. I think Joe was not ready for such a run, even at one point he offered to ‘chop’ the winnings. Joe later told me, “Hey, I went 5-0 against the best, so in my mind I was the winner.” I think many people were surprised by his excellent performance, and there is no doubt he’s now on the beer pong map! You can bet we’ll see more Little Big Time in the coming months. In his last words, Joe said, “I want to face Jeremy again, I want revenge!” (See, Joe and Jeremy also have a long standing rivalry at the poker table, but that is an entirely different story…) A noticeable absence was the self proclaimed legend in his own mind, Brent. When I asked about his absence, I was told simply, “Brent can’t play singles!” He vowed to take at least second for Tuesday’s singles event at Coaches, so we’ll see how that turns out.

Well, I’m sure I left out many of the highlights, like Gabe and his consistent performance, Huff, Eric, and many others, but don’t worry, I’ll get to you guys in future blogs. Keep on reading, and I’ll keep writing. See you at the tables bitches!
